Alternanthera versicolor Care Sheet
Alternanthera versicolor is a striking, moderately demanding aquatic plant prized for its multi-toned variegated foliage. To prevent its green, pink, and red hues from fading, it requires an environment with high energy and tight nutrient control.
Quick Care Overview
| Parameter | Optimal Range |
|---|---|
| Care Level | Moderately Demanding / Advanced |
| Water Temperature | 22°C to 28°C |
| pH Range | 6.0 – 7.0 |
| Placement | Midground to Background |
| Substrate | Nutrient-rich Aqua Soil (Heavy root feeder) |
☀️ Lighting Requirements: Medium to High
-
- Intensity: Medium to high light is required to unlock its multi-toned variegation. Low-light environments cause the plant to drop lower leaves, grow “leggy,” and fade to a dull green or yellow.
- Spectrum: A full-spectrum LED fixture with strong red and blue peaks (6,000K to 8,000K) is ideal for optimizing photosynthesis and enhancing deep pigmentation.
- Photoperiod: Keep a stable photoperiod of 8 to 10 hours daily using a dedicated timer.
CO₂ Requirements: Highly Recommended
-
- Injection Necessity: Pressurised CO₂ injection is highly recommended. Without a stable carbon supply, Alternanthera versicolor experiences severely stunted growth and struggles to transition or survive long-term submersed.
- Target Concentration: Maintain a consistent 20–30 ppm during lighting hours.
- The Stability Rule: Strong lighting without corresponding CO₂ creates a metabolic imbalance, quickly resulting in severe hair and brush algae outbreaks.
Key Maintenance & Nutrition Tips
-
- Substrate & Dosing: As a heavy root feeder, it performs best in loose, nutrient-rich aqua soil. Supplement the water column regularly with liquid iron and micronutrients to promote intense crimson and pink colors.
- Trimming: Prune the top stems regularly. This blocks the plant from shadowing its own base and encourages dense, bushy lateral growth.
